Bicoastal Blogging!

Greeting from the lower east side of Manhattan. The Mysterious DJ Goldtoe and I are in NYC for a DJ Hotstockings family function, emphasis on fun.
The view from my digs says it all, in rainbow lettering no less: HELL, YES!
We had a lovely vegan meal with Moby last night. He lives about 50 yards from here, so now he thinks I’m stalking him. Got to see his house, his vintage drum machine collection, and photo with the Dalai Lama. (Speaking of the Dalai Lama, I think I saw a Beastie Boy at Angelica’s Kitchen today, but everyone here looks famous!)
Some places for you to check out while in NYC:
Turntable Lab for vinyl and dj-ing tips.
Other Music for a big bag of music to drag home on the plane.
And because DJ Hotstockings does not live on music alone (gasp), Butter Lane for cupcakes and cupcake classes!
Super intern Kat, out VP of Content was on the other coast checking out Ask The MD faves Angus and Julia Stone in a cemetery. What the? Kat: explain!!
———
Yes, it’s absolutely true. Angus and Julia Stone lit up… a cemetery!
Well, it was moved indoors, but still at the cemetery – with the whole “dead” vibe and all.
A pretty eerie sight, if you ask me. However, the show was magnificent – and the hipster army that had traveled out in droves to see this Australian duo were on their feet by the end of the show.
I went to the show with my roommate, who before tonight had never heard of the band. His thoughts on the event:
But don’t take just any ol word on it! See for yourself why I, DJ Hotstockings, and now my roommate can’t get enough of Angus & Julia Stone:
Cheers from coast to coast, friends.

As you may have heard, U2 has had to postpone their North American tour due to Bono’s emergency back surgery in Munich.
The Edge put out a statement just a few hours after hearing from Bono. Here’s to keeping him in our thoughts and wishing him a speedy recovery:

It’s one of those inspired musical collaborations that fascinates us: James Mercer of the Portland indie/alt band The Shins, and Danger Mouse (a.k.a. Brian Burton) of the alt/funk outfit Gnarls Barkley.
We welcomed Broken Bells into the Carter Subaru Mountain Music Lounge before their sold-out concert at the Showbox. You can watch them play three songs from their brilliant debut album here:
After the musical performance, I dragged James and Brian — or do I call him Danger? — into a quiet studio for a little conversation about the creation of the band and about the future of their other bands. Check it out here:

Introducing Andrew Belle
Posted in: Uncategorized
Hi Ya’ll! You haven’t met me yet, but I’m Savvy Shawn Stewart’s intern, also known as Gavi.
I love music so much, and I’m constantly on the lookout for up and coming singer/songwriters or bands that I immediately connect to. For those who watch Grey’s Anatomy, the finale consisted of many tears, dramatic moments and incredible music.
I want to introduce you to a singer/songwriter named Andrew Belle from good ole’ Nashville, Ten.
In My Veins (featuring the fabulous Erin McCarley) made its debut during one of the most traumatic scenes in the Grey’s finale. The next day, I quickly clicked to iTunes (my most visited site), and found that the song is already #169 on the chart.
Belle has worked with lovely artists such as Katie Herzig on his song “Static Waves” and has been featured on the shows One Tree Hill, Grey’s Anatomy, 90210, Ghost Whisperer, & Keeping up with the Kardashians.
To listen to Andrew Belle’s In My Veins, visit iTunes or check him out on YouTube.

Horse Jam

Just when you thought Band of Horses couldn’t get any cooler, this happens:
Yeah, that’s Band of Horses’ frontman Ben Bridwell with Eddie Vedder at Madison Square Garden. He’s on stage to attempt a daunting task: sing Chris Cornell’s part on the Temple of the Dog duet “Hunger Strike”. Too cool.

KT Tunstall’s next act
Posted in: Uncategorized
The long-awaited third album by the Scottish singer/songwriter is coming this fall — probably September. She promises a big change of direction: New band members, and a new image for KT. She says she got “a nose job, new DD cup, and curly hair plugs.” I’m not sure I believe that last part, but judging from this new song, she’s still using the technology that allows her to be a one-woman band when she feels like it — the device she calls her “wee bastard.”

Band of Horses have been in heavy rotation on my iPod since their striking debut Everything All The Time. For a minute, they lived in Seattle, and that was cool. Now they’re back in North Carolina where there are, in fact, more horses. (I live in Seattle but my mom lives in North Carolina, so I know this for a fact.)
I also know that BOH’s new album Infinite Arms is a strong contender for Album of The Year.
This is the first track on the album:
Band of Horses – Factory
(Note to BOH: it’s so great that you’ve peeled back a little of the wall of reverb, but when you can actually hear the lyrics, are you sure you want them to be about candy bars? I kid because I love! This is a great song.)
While I’m are kicking back listening to the Album Of The Year, I’ll might just be sporting these fine Band Of Horses shoes. Horse shoes. I get it!

Answers and Angels
Posted in: Uncategorized
Answers, first. Yesterday’s puzzle was a visual representation of 3 band names. Shannon A. figured out the clues and won Broken Bells tix. Here’s the answer:
Death Cab For Cutie + Owl City = Freelance Whales.
The Freelance Whales song “Hannah” is great. If you didn’t listen to it yesterday, keep scrolling down to yesterday’s post.
As you scroll down, you’ll pass a photo I snapped yesterday right in our Music Lounge. Our sister station, The Wolf, roped in our space for their own “lounge”. I would have been angry, but the band they had in put a few sullen, shoe gazing, surly Mountain artists who’ve visited the lounge (and shall remain nameless) to shame!
Stealing Angels sang, danced, and hugged their way thru a few songs. They were super hot, very talented and entertaining to boot. Coincidentally, they also wore boots! And get this, that middle Angel is Loretta Lynn’s grand daughter. And the rightie Angel? John Wayne’s grand daughter. Boy howdy, that’s lineage!
Ok, continue scrolling now. Our detour down a country road has ended.
