Today you can finally own one brand new song from Grammy Award winning U.K. artist Adele! Her new CD 21 features the song “Rolling In The Deep” available today on itunes.

A couple weeks back I had the great pleasure of sneaking down to L.A. for a top secret Adele showcase at Largo where she belted out 4 new songs (and one oldie for good  measure). Overheard as the who’s who crowd of music industry vets shuffled to the bar after Adele’s performance? “Oh my god, I cried”. And no, I wasn’t overhearing myself! She’s just that powerful.

But she’s also just a fun, cheeky girl. Get to know Adele by watching this brief but illuminating little movie I made with her backstage at Largo. And note, Princess Leia is watching you!

I was scrolling through my Twitter feed today and singer/songwrtier Mike Doughty steered his followers to this amazing track-by-track breakdown of one of the Rolling Stones’ signature songs, “Gimme Shelter.” I had to share it.

There’s a website called Dangerous Minds which has posted seperate audio files of the vocals (Mick Jagger plus Merry Clayton, whose ballsy singing really makes the record), two Keith Richards guitar tracks, Bill Wyman’s bass line, and Charlie Watts’ incredible drumming, so you can hear just how powerful each of the elements were before they combined to make one of the Stones’ most iconic songs.

Here’s the isolated vocal track, and the commentary from Dangerous Minds:

The vocal harmonies of Mick Jagger and Merry Clayton are nothing short of astonishing, heard naked here. Clayton’s performance was one of the most significant contributions of a woman to a Stones number. “Rape, murder; It’s just a shot away, It’s just a shot away…” Listen to what happens to her voice at about 2:30 to 3:00 minutes in. Fantastic.

If you’re a Stones fan, you must check out the rest of the tracks here.

Thanks to Mike Doughty for the tip.

. . . but this one’s fun to hear about, because it really happened, many years ago.

Gather the family around the computer and listen as TV Boy John Curley (the former Evening Magazine host who used to join us in the morning) shares his tragic yet hilarious holiday tale. (This particular retelling goes back to 2005; former Mountain Morning Show co-host Mike West is on here too.)

Warning: It’s not for the squeamish. Contains smoking, death by gravy, and some of the grossest sound effects you’ve ever heard:

CURLEY THANKSGIVING 2005

And don’t forget another Turkey Day tradition — Arlo Guthrie’s Alice’s Restaurant airs three times on Thanksgiving on The Mountain: 6:00am, 12:00 noon, and 6:00pm.

Enjoy . . . and Happy Thanksgiving!

Hey Genius! took a hiatus. They ideas just weren’t flowing. And then suddenly, THE idea of the year. You thought CouplePuppets was good? Or The Pete Townsend Guitar Strum Watch? No. Seattle Sun Finder app? Save it for a rainy day. If you can get this Hey Genius idea made, you will be a billionaire.

That’s right, Mrs. Kobe, you can thank me later.

If your idea of Southern holiday cheer is a big bottle of Bourbon, congratulations, you’re a member of my family. If your idea of Southern holiday cheer is a Christmas disc from Carbon Leaf, well Merry Christmas to you!

Christmas Child, the new offering from Richmond, Virginia’s Carbon Leaf, features all new original holiday inspired songs. You can hurl yourself into the holiday spirit without having to hear another lame version of White Christmas (because let’s face it, once you’ve heard Alvin and The Chipmunks do it, nothing else even comes close).

The disc is available in a billion incarnations on the band’s website: www.carbonleaf.com and here’s a sample of what you’ll get:

01 Christmas Child

02 Red Punch Green Punch

07 Christmas At Sea

And just for fun…some old Carbon Leaf love

Ho, Ho, Ho

Me neither, because I ripped all my Beatles CDs into my iPod years ago . . . but it would be cool if all the Beatles’ music was officially available in iTunes, wouldn’t it?

It looks like that’s about to happen, according to trusworthy sources like Apple Insider.

And here’s more speculation from Fast Company.

Here’s what it says on Apple’s web site (Click it for the full effect):

If you ask me, the collection won’t be complete unless they include this one — it’s freaky:
